Fallout 76 has made huge strides since its tumultous release in 2018. Even now, that negative stigma still lingers within the Fallout fanbase as many are still sore over Fallout 76's release state, or simply the fact they don't believe Fallout should be a multiplayer game. Regardless, Fallout 76 has steadily improved in the five-plus years after its release. That work has paid off as it recently shattered personal bests in playerbase numbers.

New and returning players now get to see just how expansive Fallout 76 is now and embark on Fallout 76's many good quests. These quests, many added after Fallout 76 received human NPCs, have helped flesh out Appalachia and its surrounding Expedition locations, helping to make it one of Fallout's best locations. Of all the missions in Fallout 76, which ones are the best?

Updated on August 25, 2024, by Antonio Samson: With the popularity of Amazon Prime's Fallout show, fans have had more intrigue in its story. Fallout 76 has a plethora of missions that have memorable stories and characters or even just fun to play. This article was updated to include more missions and to meet CBR's editorial and formatting standards.

Favorite Fallout Game in the Franchise

Of the six primary Fallout games (and four spinoff games), which is your favorite? I have a soft spot for Fallout 3, as it was the first game in the series I played. What’s your favorite Fallout game so far?

"A Colossal Problem" is one of Fallout 76's most exhilarating public events, demanding strategy and teamwork. This event is triggered when a player launches a nuke on Monongah Mine, releasing the terrifying Wendigo Colossus, Earle Williams. The event is a race against time, as players must band together to defeat Earle before he can escape.

Earle is no ordinary enemy; he's a behemoth that brings fear and destruction, with abilities that can debilitate players, such as fear-inducing roars that paralyze even the most seasoned Vault Dwellers. The battle is chaotic, with waves of smaller Wendigos swarming the players, adding layers of difficulty, and placing it at the bottom of our ranking.

14 "The Lowe-Down" Takes The Vault Dweller On A Cryptid Hunt

Unravel The Mystery Of The Sheepsquatch

Fallout 76's Best Quests (3)

Quest Giver

Calvin van Lowe's terminal

Quest Location

Van Lowe Taxidermy

Reward(s)

500 XP, 100 Caps, Sheepsquatch staff, and plans for Sheepsquatch mascot head

"The Lowe-Down" is a standout quest that immerses players in the folklore of Appalachia, where cryptid legends abound. This quest kicks off when the Vault Dweller investigates Van Lowe Taxidermy, the headquarters of Calvin van Lowe, a man obsessed with finding the Sheepsquatch. Calvin's terminal reveals his meticulous research, and players must follow his leads, gathering clues across several eerie and remote locations.

The investigation is a suspenseful journey, as the Vault Dweller uncovers hints suggesting the Sheepsquatch might be more than just a legend. The quest builds tension as players piece together the mystery, leading to a climactic encounter with the elusive creature.

13 "Overseer, Overseen" Closes The Loop On The Vault Dweller's Journey

A Reflective Meeting With The Overseer

Fallout 76's Best Quests (4)

Quest Giver

Automatically after "One Of Us"

Quest Location

The Overseer's home

Reward(s)

1000 XP, 200 Caps, and the "Home Defense" perk card

"Overseer, Overseen" is a quest filled with emotional weight and narrative significance, providing closure to one of the game's central storylines. Throughout Fallout 76, players have been following the Overseer's journey, uncovering holotapes and notes that detail her thoughts, struggles, and the tough decisions she made in the aftermath of the Great War.

This quest finally brings players face-to-face with the Overseer, where they can discuss the impact of their decisions and the state of Appalachia. The conversation is heartfelt, reflecting on the burden of leadership and the sacrifices made along the way. This moment of connection between the Vault Dweller and the Overseer is a reflective pause in the game's otherwise action-packed narrative, highlighting personal struggles and the shared responsibility of rebuilding the world.

12 "One Violent Night" Is A Musical Public Event With A Twist

Summon The Wendigo Through Rock And Roll

Fallout 76's Best Quests (5)

Quest Giver

Ghoul named Wolf

Quest Location

Sons of Dane compound

Reward(s)

200 XP, 40 Caps, and various high-level items (including legendary gear)

"One Violent Night" is one of the most unique public events, combining the chaotic energy of a raid with the offbeat humor the series is known for. Taking place at the Sons of Dane compound, the event is initiated when players speak to Wolf, a ghoul who explains that the only way to draw out the feared Wendigo is through the power of rock and roll. The event tasks players with playing instruments and making as much noise as possible to lure the Wendigo out of hiding.

The spectacle of this quest lies in its absurdity; players will find themselves in a band of sorts, each contributing to the cacophony in hopes of summoning the beast. Once the Wendigo arrives, the event shifts gears into a frantic battle, where the noise and music still play a role, but survival becomes the priority.

11 "An Organic Solution" Explores The Consequences Of Pre-War Experiments

Combat Mutated Creatures Born From Scientific Ambition

Fallout 76's Best Quests (6)

Quest Giver

Dr. Blackburn

Quest Location

Dolly Sods Wilderness

Reward(s)

500 XP, 100 Caps, random plans, and T-45 Power Armor helmet (optional)

"An Organic Solution" delves into the darker side of Fallout 76's lore, exploring the unintended consequences of pre-War scientific endeavors. The quest begins when the Vault Dweller encounters Dr. Blackburn, a scientist with a noble-sounding goal: to restore the fertility of Appalachia's soil using an experimental formula.

The experiment leads to the outbreak of a new, highly aggressive breed of mutated creatures that begin to terrorize the region. The quest is a stark reminder of the dangers of unchecked scientific experimentation, as players must deal with the fallout (pun intended) of Blackburn's well-intentioned but disastrous research.

10 "I Am Become Death" Gives The Vault Dweller The Chance To Drop A Nuke

Experience The Power Of Nuclear Devastation

Fallout 76's Best Quests (7)

Quest Giver

Automatically after "Officer on Deck"

Quest Location

The Whitespring bunker

Reward(s)

How This Forgotten Classic Video Game Influenced the Fallout Franchise

Wasteland was a groundbreaking adventure game that influenced countless titles that followed including Fallout.

Nuclear weapons have always been a big part of Fallout, yet the franchise rarely allows players to drop their own. Fallout 76 changes that thanks to "I Am Become Death," with the name of the quest referencing J. Robert Oppenheimer or "the father of the atomic bomb."

"I Am Become Death" sees the Vault Dweller seeking out a nuclear keycard and launch codes and then battling their way through one of the three nuclear missile silos to launch a nuke. Generally, the purpose of this is to draw out the final boss of the original storyline and trigger a raid battle alongside other players, but the nuke can be dropped anywhere, for better and for worse. The process of launching a nuke is repeatable, but nothing can beat the first time launching one, placing this mission at the number 10 spot in our ranking.

9 "Something Sentimental" Offers Another Nuke Target

Uncover The Truth Behind Earle Williams

Fallout 76's Best Quests (9)

Quest Giver

Maggie Williams

Quest Location

Foundation

Reward(s)

Earle's pocket watch (lie to Maggie), 60 Caps & ~300 XP (tell the truth to Maggie)

For a while, there was only one real target for a nuke. That changed with "Something Sentimental" as a part of the The Legendary Run update shortly after Wastelanders. To trigger the mission, talk to Maggie Williams at the Foundation, one of the settlements/factions added in Wastelanders.

Maggie wants to know the truth about her father, who has long gone missing. Her father, Earle Williams, had worked in Monongah Mine, which had collapsed. Maggie suggests a large explosion could re-open the mind, hence the nuke. What the Vault Dweller finds in Monogah Mine is the former Earle, a now mutated Wendigo colossus. Earle is a tough raid boss fight, but a fun and rewarding one, and learning more about what happened to Earle and bringing closure to Maggie altogether makes for a great questline.

8 "Trick Or Treat" Is A Daily Quest That Provides A Quick Adrenaline Rush

Gather Pumpkins While Fending Off The Scorched

Fallout 76's Best Quests (10)

Quest Giver

Jack O' Lantern (Daily)

Quest Location

Pumpkin House

Reward(s)

Pumpkin grenades, radioactive pumpkin seeds, 200 XP, 20 Caps, and 4 legendary scripts

Fallout 76 has loads of daily quests that can be continually repeated. This always ensures there's something to do in Appalachia. One of the best daily quests is "Trick or Treat," where the Vault Dweller helps a Mr. Handy named Jack O' Lantern collect pumpkins at The Pumpkin House. Yes, this is based on a real-life landmark formally known as the Joseph S. Miller House, known for its yearly pumpkin decorating tradition.

Jack O' Lantern needs ten pumpkins, which sounds easier said than done. The Vault Dweller will need to go to a nearby pumpkin patch where they'll fend off Scorched and potentially even a Scorchbeast. "Trick or Treat" is a quick daily quest, but it's never a boring one.

7 "The Catalyst" Concludes The Brotherhood Of Steel Questline

Choose Between Paladin Rahmani And Knight Shin

Fallout 76's Best Quests (11)

Quest Giver

Automatically after "A Satisfied Conscience

Quest Location

Vault 96

Reward(s)

Random XP, random Caps, random rewards, and a Power Armor chassis

Steel Dawn and Steel Reign are together the Brotherhood of Steel questline — the second major questline added to Fallout 76. The Brotherhood of Steel questline is altogether amazing and feels very much like a true Fallout storyline.

In the final quest, "The Catalyst," the Vault Dweller along with Paladin Rahmani and Knight Shin attempt to finally put a stop to Dr. Edgar Blackburn's research on the FEV (forced evolution virus). Rahmani and Shin's competing philosophies finally boil over on how to move forward, leaving the Vault Dweller with a difficult choice between the two. It's the kind of mission and storyline that is right at home with the rest of the franchise and has helped improve Fallout 76's reputation.

6 Sneak Into The Enclave's Lair In "Bunker Buster"

Infiltrate The Enclave's Hidden Bunker

Fallout 76's Best Quests (12)

Quest Giver

After the conclusion of "Uncle Sam" or finding the body of Jefferson Grey

Quest Location

Abandoned Waste Dump

Reward(s)

50 XP, a Congressional access card, and a Death Claw Gauntlet

What's the Brotherhood of Steel without the Enclave? The two factions have long been competing to determine the best path forward for the country. While the Vault Dweller spends some time with the Brotherhood of Steel in the main story, their time with the Enclave will leave a bigger impression.

"Bunker Buster" is arguably when the main Fallout 76 storyline gets good, sadly closer to the end of the story. "Bunker Buster" sees the Vault Dweller hacking computers, finding key codes, and avoiding laser grids to sneak into the fortified bunker. "Bunker Buster" is a great infiltration mission that kicks off one of the most fascinating sections of Fallout 76's overall story.

5 "Wasted On Nukashine" Introduces Fallout 76's Funniest Character

Meet Biv E. Ridge And Embark On A Wild Ride

Quest Giver

Party poster near Vault-Tec University in Morgantown

Quest Location

Morgantown

Reward(s)

500 XP, 150 Caps, brewing station plan, fermenter plan, and a bottle of Nukashine

Related

Every Fallout 4 Vault, Explained

Fallout 4 had some truly interesting Vaults and experiments to dive into and explore.

College and partying go hand-in-hand, and luckily, Fallout 76 leans into this with "Wasted On Nukashine." Upon finding a poster advertising a college party, the Vault Dweller checks out the party on Fraternity Row by Vault-Tec University in Morgantown. There, the Vault Dweller finds the remnants of that pre-War party and a mysterious bottle of Nukashine.

One sip and the Vault Dweller blacks out, waking up in a random location on the map. The Vault Dweller finds the source of the Nukashine in the form of the hilarious Biv E. Ridge, a robobrain drunkard who's been brewing Nukashine in Big Al's Tattoo Parlor. Biv is hilarious and his series of sidequest instills much-needed humor into Appalachia, placing this mission at the number 5 spot on our list.

4 Find A Missing Child In "Cold Case"

Solve A Chilling Mystery At Wavy Willard's Water Park

Fallout 76's Best Quests (14)

Quest Giver

Miss Annie

Quest Location

Wavy Willard's Water Park

Reward(s)

75 XP, 95 Caps, random items/plans, and the Perfect Storm automatic rifle

Crime-solving quests are always some of the best quests in a Fallout game. There's a great satisfaction of solving a mystery like a detective. Fallout 76 has just the case for detective Vault Dwellers in "Cold Case."

In "Cold Case" a Miss Nanny, named Miss Annie, is searching for a child that went missing under her care at Wavy Willard's Water Park and needs the Vault Dweller's help to find him. This sets off a deep investigation into what happened to the child and who took them with some interesting twists along the way. It's also worth noting that the Perfect Storm weapon received as a reward is scaled to the Vault Dweller's level, so it may be better to wait until after reaching level 50 to complete this intriguing quest.

3 "Flavors Of Mayhem" Helps The Vault Dweller Learn Useful, And Not-So-Useful, Tactics

Test Out Raiders' Tactics For Rose's Amusem*nt

Fallout 76's Best Quests (15)

Quest Giver

Rose

Quest Location

Top of the World

Reward(s)

Black Diamond melee weapon and explosive bait

The main story of Fallout 76 lacks personality, and it takes a while to get to the seriously interesting story bits with the Enclave. That's where Rose comes into play. Rose is a no-nonsense and wise-cracking robot who's also the lone remaining member of the raider group, the Cutthroats.

Rose brings some energy to Fallout 76's narrative and isn't afraid to use the Vault Dweller for her own amusem*nt. In "Flavors of Mayhem," Rose asks the Vault Dweller to test out different tactics of past raider groups to see which one is most effective. This involves using a Syringe on a Yao Guai, stealing from a Super Mutant camp, and to "make friends with a Deathclaw." "Flavors of Mayhem" is a great quest not just for comedy, but for strategy as well as the Vault Dweller has to figure out the best approach to achieve each task.

2 "Recruitment Blues" Is One Of The Most Relatable Quests In All Of Fallout

Navigate The Tedious DMV To Get Your Military ID

Fallout 76's Best Quests (16)

Quest Giver

Grant McNamara's note titled "Final Stand"

Quest Location

Fort Defiance

Reward(s)

90 XP (when receiving the ID), 1694 XP, 60 Caps, Photomode frame, Ultracite gun, aid items, fusion cells, and Field Scribe uniform

We've all been there — needing to go to the DMV. It's inconvenient and always a slog. Waiting for so long before that number is finally called. It was only a matter of time before the Fallout series satirizes that experience.

As a part of the initial Brotherhood of Steel storyline in the main story, the Vault Dweller needs a government-issued military ID card. Robots still operate the Charleston DMV without missing a beat from the pre-War era, although the Vault Dweller would love for plenty of beats to be skipped. The process of getting the ID at the DMV during "Recruitment Blues" is hilariously slow and one that most players will appreciate thanks to their own experiences.

1 The "Order Of Mysteries" Questline Is One Of The Best Questlines In Fallout

Uncover The Secrets Of The Mistress Of Mystery

Quest Giver ("Into the Mystery")

Young woman (corpse)

Quest Location

Her corpse can be found in a random location

Reward(s)

250 XP, 70 Caps, Photomode frame, Veil of Secrets, and random aid and items

The "Order of Mysteries" questline is amazing and a must-play for any Fallout fan. It's based around the Mistress of Mystery serial radio hero, an ally of The Silver Shroud who himself has a great quest in Fallout 4.

The "Order of Mysteries" questline has five parts beginning with "Into the Mystery," which sees the Vault Dweller slowly become a member of the Order of Mysteries — a past faction that has since fallen, formally co-founded by Shannon Rivers, who voiced the Mistress of Mystery. What happened to the Order of Mysteries? A lot, and unraveling that mystery makes this questline so amazing. It's intriguing and emotional, making it a quest all Fallout fans should experience, making it the best mission in Fallout 76.
